Giving a model both the first and the last frame turns image-to-video into a transition you control: the model only has to invent the motion in between. On 8frame, five models accept an end frame: Veo 3.1 (all three tiers), Kling 2.5 Turbo Pro and Kling 2.1 Pro, Seedance (2.5 and 2.0) and Wan 3.0 Prime. The newer Kling models (v3, 2.6 Pro, O1, O3) do not, and neither do Hailuo H3, Happy Horse, Grok Imagine or Gemini Omni Flash. The cheapest end-frame clip is Veo 3.1 Lite at 33 credits for 8 seconds without sound.

The rules for each
Veo 3.1 switches to a first-and-last-frame mode when you connect both images, and that mode is always 8 seconds long, on every tier. Lite renders at 720p, Veo 3.1 and Fast at 1080p. The provider also crops images that are not 16:9 or 9:16, so prepare both frames in the output shape; details in Veo 3.1 start image requirements.
Kling supports an end frame only on the older 2.5 Turbo Pro and 2.1 Pro; Kling v3, 2.6 Pro, 2.1 Master, O1 and O3 do not take one. For a transition on Kling, choose 2.5 Turbo Pro, which is also the cheaper of the two.
Seedance needs the first frame set before it will take a last frame, and the end frame works only when no reference images are attached. It is either references or first-and-last, not both.
Wan 3.0 Prime accepts an end image in image-to-video mode. Base Wan 3.0 does not, so the end frame is a reason to pay for Prime.
What first and last frames are good for
- Before and after: an empty room to a furnished one, a sketch to a finished product.
- Hiding a cut: end one shot on the frame the next one starts from.
- Logo and product reveals: land exactly on the approved composition instead of hoping the model stops there. For logos, keep the real mark as an overlay rather than generating it; see AI logo animation.
- Loops: use the same image as first and last frame.
The two frames should share lighting, lens and scale. The further apart they are, the more the model has to invent, and the more likely the middle is to morph.
Cheapest route to a good transition
Test the pair on Veo 3.1 Lite silent (33 credits) or Kling 2.5 Turbo Pro (48 for 5 seconds). If the motion between the frames is right, rerun the same pair on the model you will deliver on. Twenty test transitions on Lite silent cost 660 credits; do the same on full Veo 3.1 with audio and it is 8,960.
