A church's media need is high volume and low budget: weekly sermon graphics, announcement slides, series artwork, social posts. Generation fits that well. What it must not touch is the congregation, because the whole point is that these are real people who know each other.
TL;DR
- Never generate congregation members, worship scenes, or your building. People arrive and recognise
- Consent care matters more here than almost anywhere: children, vulnerable people, and anyone in a pastoral situation
- Generate: series artwork, sermon slides, announcement graphics, abstract backgrounds
- A month of weekly media: roughly 400 credits, about $4
- Film the pastor and real testimony, with permission, always
What to generate
Sermon series artwork. The highest-value use: a series needs a distinctive visual identity and commissioning one is beyond most budgets. Seedream 5 at 6 credits per direction, so twenty directions for 120.
Slide backgrounds. Abstract, textural, quiet enough that text reads over them. Wan 3.0 at 480p is 24 credits per 5 seconds for motion, or a still at 6.
Announcement graphics. Weekly, repeatable, templated once.
Titles with exact text. Nano Banana Pro at 21 credits when the series name or a verse reference must be spelled correctly, which it must.
Event promotion. Veo 3.1 Lite at 54 credits for 8 seconds with audio.
What a month costs
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Item | Route | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| 20 announcement and social graphics | Seedream 5 at 6 | 120 |
| 4 series title cards with exact text | Nano Banana Pro at 21 | 84 |
| 6 slide background plates | Wan 3.0 at 480p | 144 |
| 1 event promo with audio | Veo 3.1 Lite at 54 | 54 |
| Total | ~402 credits, about $4.02 |
Inside a $19 Starter plan with most of the month remaining. For an organisation where the media budget is frequently zero, that is the point.
What not to generate
Congregation members. A generated person in a pew is a fabricated member of a community whose members know each other.
Worship scenes. A generated room full of people worshipping misrepresents your gathering, and anyone who visits will notice.
Your building. People arrive at it.
Testimony. Never. A generated account of a changed life is the most serious version of a fabricated testimonial, and in this context it is a matter of integrity rather than of advertising rules.
Depictions presented as historical or scriptural fact. Illustrative artwork is a long tradition and is fine when it reads as artwork. A photorealistic generated scene presented as how something looked is a different claim.
Consent, which needs more care here than elsewhere
Churches film people in vulnerable and personal moments, and the ordinary consent rules apply with extra weight.
Children require guardian consent, specifically and in writing, and many churches sensibly avoid publishing identifiable images of children at all.
People in pastoral situations cannot meaningfully consent in the moment. Ask later, separately, when the situation has changed.
Consent is revocable. Someone who agreed a year ago can change their mind, and honouring that matters more than the content does.
Baptisms, weddings and funerals need explicit permission for public use, not just for recording.
None of this is about AI. It is about filming a community, and it is the part worth getting right.
What to film
The pastor, teaching. A phone, a window, one point in ninety seconds. This is what reaches people who will not walk through a door yet.
Real testimony, with documented permission, from people who want to tell it.
The building at its best hour, so visitors know what to expect.
Ordinary Sunday, plainly. Visitors are reassured by plausible rather than by polished.
The template point
The real saving is not generation cost, it is decisions. Board the slide layout, the announcement format and the series card template once, and every subsequent week is a fill-in rather than a design session.
For a volunteer media team, that is the difference between sustainable and not.
FAQ
Can churches use AI for media? For artwork, slides and graphics, yes, at a few dollars a month.
Can I generate worship or congregation imagery? No. Those are real people and visitors compare.
What about illustrative biblical artwork? Illustrative is a long tradition and reads as artwork. Photorealistic scenes presented as documentation are a different claim.
What does a month cost? About $4 in credits.
Generate the artwork, film the people who consent. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
