A flyer is handed to someone who did not ask for it, glanced at for one second, and either kept or binned. That single second is the entire design brief, and almost every flyer fails it by trying to say five things.
Free template tools handle flyers completely. Generation's contribution is the artwork and the exploration, and the important part of this article is the checklist that stops you printing five hundred of something wrong.
TL;DR
- Free template tools are sufficient. Layout, type, print export, all free
- One message. A flyer that says five things communicates none
- Generate artwork, set type in an editor. Generated text garbles and printing is irreversible
- On 8frame: artwork from 6 credits, print upscale at 11 per 24MP block
- Print five first. Always, before the run
The one-message rule
A flyer has one job: get one piece of information into someone's head as they walk past a noticeboard or take it from a hand.
That means one message at level one. A grand opening. A date. A discount. A name.
Everything else is level three, small, at the bottom, for the person who has already decided to care. The instinct to include the full menu, all six services and every social handle is what turns a flyer into recycling.
The test: hold it at arm's length for one second, then look away. What do you remember? That is what your flyer says. If the answer is "nothing," redesign it.
What free template tools cover
Layouts sized to standard paper, type tools, print-ready export with bleed, and libraries of stock elements. That is the complete job, for nothing.
Generation does not replace this. It supplies artwork that goes inside it.
Where generation fits
Background artwork and texture. Something specific rather than a stock gradient.
Illustrative elements. A motif, a decorative border, a thematic image.
Concept exploration. Twenty directions at 6 credits each to find the visual approach before building the real file.
Photographic backgrounds you cannot shoot. A season, a place, an atmosphere.
What not to generate: your food, your venue, your product, your team. Anyone who comes because of the flyer will see the real thing, and the gap between them is the problem.
What it costs
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Task | Route | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Artwork direction | Seedream 5 | 6 |
| Cheapest volume exploration | Imagen 4 Fast | 4 |
| Illustrative, non-photoreal | Reve | 34 |
| Clean a real photo for use | background removal | 12 |
| Adjust artwork | Flux Edit (FLUX.2 pro) | 7 |
| Upscale for print, per 24MP block | Topaz Image Upscale | 11 |
A finished flyer's artwork: fifteen directions (90), one edit (7), one upscale (11) is about 108 credits, roughly $1.08.
The print checklist
This is the part that saves money, and every item on it has cost someone a print run.
- Bleed. Anything touching the edge must extend past the trim line, usually 3mm. Without it you get white slivers.
- Safe margin. Keep text at least 5mm inside the trim. Cutting is not perfectly accurate.
- Resolution. 300 dpi at final size. Get the spec from your printer.
- Colour mode. Print is CMYK. Bright screen colours, especially vivid blues and oranges, will shift. If colour matters, get a proof.
- Black text. Should be single-channel black, not a mix, or it prints slightly blurred.
- Check the information. Date, time, address, phone, website. Have someone else read it. This is the most common expensive error and it is not a design problem.
- Print five first. Always. Hold them, read them at arm's length, show someone. Then order five hundred.
The distribution reality
A flyer's effectiveness is mostly about where it goes and when, not how it looks. A well-designed flyer on the wrong noticeboard performs worse than an ugly one in the right hands.
Worth saying because people spend a week on the design and ten minutes on the distribution, and the ratio should be reversed.
