Icons have two requirements that generative imaging does not meet: they need to be vectors, so they scale to any size cleanly, and they need to sit on a pixel grid so the strokes stay crisp at 16 and 24 pixels. Generated output is raster, soft-edged and unaligned.
So the useful framing is: free icon libraries are the answer for interface icons, and generation makes app icons and illustrated marks, which are a different job.
TL;DR
- Free icon libraries are the answer for UI icons. Vector, consistent, pixel-aligned, thousands of them, free
- Generation produces raster images, not vectors. It cannot make a real icon set
- Where it fits: app icons, illustrated marks, and concept exploration before drawing
- On 8frame: Seedream 5 at 6 credits, Nano Banana Pro at 21 when text is involved
- Test at 16 pixels. Almost everything generated fails there
Why generated icons fail as icons
No vector output. An icon is used at 16px in a menu and 512px in a store listing. Only a vector survives both. Generated PNGs do not.
No pixel-grid alignment. At small sizes, a stroke that falls between pixels renders soft and muddy. Icon designers align to the grid deliberately; a model has no concept of it.
No set consistency. An icon set works because every icon shares stroke weight, corner radius, optical size and visual density. Twenty separately generated icons will not share any of them.
Soft edges. Generated images are diffusion output: slightly noisy, slightly soft. Icons need hard, clean geometry.
What free icon libraries give you instead
Thousands of icons, in vector format, designed as coherent sets with consistent stroke weight and grid alignment, free, under permissive licences, in multiple weights and styles.
For interface work there is no argument here. A free library beats generation on every axis that matters and costs nothing.
Where generation genuinely fits
App icons. A single illustrated mark at large size, rendered rather than drawn. This is a real use: app icons are seen at 60 to 180 pixels, they are illustrative rather than geometric, and they do not need to be vectors.
Illustrated marks and badges. Achievement icons, category illustrations, decorative marks. Larger, more expressive, not part of a UI set.
Concept exploration. Twenty directions at 6 credits each to find what a mark should look like, then draw the real one in vector.
Spot illustrations that sit alongside icons but are not icons.
What it costs
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Task | Route | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Icon or mark concept | Seedream 5 | 6 |
| Cheapest volume exploration | Imagen 4 Fast | 4 |
| Mark with correct text or letterform | Nano Banana Pro | 21 |
| Illustrative, non-photoreal | Reve | 34 |
| Clean up a concept | Flux Edit (FLUX.2 pro) | 7 |
| Remove the background | background removal | 12 |
| Upscale for store listing | Clarity image upscale | 13 |
Twenty app icon directions: 120 credits, about $1.20. Then draw the winner properly, or have a designer do it.
Prompting an icon or mark
- State the format. "App icon, centred subject, simple, flat, on a solid background, no text."
- One subject. Two elements is already too many at icon size.
- Flat or minimal depth. Gradients and shadows muddy at small sizes.
- Limited palette. Two or three colours.
- Generous margin. Say "subject occupies the centre with clear space around it," because platforms crop and round corners.
- No text. Text in an icon is unreadable at real size and unreliable when generated.
The test that decides it
Export at 16, 32 and 64 pixels and look at all three. Most generated icons are attractive at 512 and illegible at 32, which is exactly backwards from how icons are used.
For an app icon specifically, also test it: on a busy home screen, next to real competitor apps, in both light and dark mode, and with the platform's corner rounding applied.
FAQ
Can AI generate SVG icons? Not reliably. Image models produce raster output. Vector conversion of a generated raster gives messy paths.
What is the best free icon source? A free vector icon library. For UI work it beats generation on every axis.
Can I use a generated app icon? Yes, that is the legitimate case. Test it at real size on a real home screen first.
How do I get a consistent icon set? Draw it, or license one. Separately generated icons will not share stroke weight or density.
Library for UI icons, generation for app marks. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
