Motion graphics is a precision discipline. Type hits a mark on a specific frame, a shape eases with a curve you chose, elements align to a grid that holds. Generative video gives you none of that: it produces plausible motion, not specified motion, and there is no way to say "hold for six frames then snap."
So the honest framing is that generation does not make motion graphics. It makes the backgrounds and textures that motion graphics sit on, and at 24 credits per 5 seconds that is genuinely useful.
TL;DR
- Generation cannot do precise timing or exact type. Those are the definition of motion graphics
- What it does well: backgrounds, textures, abstract loops, organic movement behind graphic elements
- Cheapest plate: Wan 3.0 at 480p, 24 credits per 5 seconds, about $0.24
- Free template libraries cover lower thirds and transitions, and they look like templates
- Build the graphics in an editor, generate the world behind them
What generation cannot give you
Frame-accurate timing. You cannot direct a model to land a move on frame 37.
Exact typography. Text inside generated video garbles, and even when it holds, it is not your font at your kerning.
Clean vector edges. Generated output is photographic in nature: soft, noisy, resampled. Motion graphics live on hard edges.
Repeatability. Two generations from the same prompt differ. A graphics system needs elements that match exactly across a series.
Alpha channels. Generated video comes as a flat frame. Compositing needs transparency, which means a matte you have to create.
What it does give you
Background plates. Abstract motion behind titles. This is the main use and it is a good one: a specific, non-stock texture for the cost of a quarter.
Organic movement. Ink blooming, smoke, particles, light moving across a surface, liquid. Exactly the things that are tedious to simulate in an editor and that generation produces naturally.
Texture and grain layers. Overlaid on graphic work to break up the digital cleanliness.
Concept exploration. Twenty background directions for 480 credits, about $4.80, to find the feel before building the real thing.
What it costs
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Element | Route | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Background plate, 5s at 480p | Wan 3.0 | 24 |
| Plate at 1080p, 5s | Wan 3.0 Prime | 34 |
| Long continuous plate, 30s | Wan 3.0 Prime | 203 |
| Plate with generated audio, 8s | Veo 3.1 Lite | 54 |
| Controlled camera movement, 5s | Kling v3 Standard silent | 57 |
| Still texture to animate in-editor | Seedream 5 | 6 |
| Title card with exact text | Nano Banana Pro | 21 |
| Sound design hit | ElevenLabs SFX | 5 |
A full set of background plates for a project, ten variations: 240 credits, about $2.40.
The division of labour that works
- Generate the plate. Abstract, textural, no text, no hard edges needed.
- Build the graphics in your editor. Real fonts, real easing curves, real alignment, real alpha.
- Composite. Graphics over plate, with blend modes if the plate should interact with the type.
- Grade both together so the generated layer does not sit visibly apart.
The plate never needs high resolution, because it is soft by design and type sits over it. 480p is genuinely correct here, which makes it the cheapest tier in the whole workflow.
On free template libraries
Lower thirds, transitions, title animations: free libraries cover all of it and the results are competent. They also look like the library, and the same packs circulate widely.
The choice: a free template that reads as generic, or twenty minutes in an editor with a generated plate behind it. For a one-off, the template. For anything with a brand attached, the second.
FAQ
Can AI generate motion graphics? It generates footage. Motion graphics require precise timing and exact type, which generation does not provide.
What is the best free motion graphics tool? A free editor plus a template library. Generation supplies backgrounds, not graphics.
What resolution for background plates? 480p, because type sits over it and it is soft by design. 24 credits.
Can I get transparency from generated video? No. Output is a flat frame. Any matte has to be created in your editor.
Generate the texture, build the type yourself. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
