Sound design is the cheapest large improvement available to most video. A clip with considered sound reads as produced; the same clip with nothing under it reads as a test render. Generated effects cost about five cents each, which removes the last excuse.
The risk is the opposite of scarcity: at five cents an effect, people add too many.
TL;DR
- Free sound libraries are excellent and cover most common needs at no cost
- Generation wins on specificity: the exact sound you described, at the exact length
- On 8frame: ElevenLabs SFX at 5 credits per effect, about five cents
- Layer three sounds, not one. A single effect reads as an effect; three read as a place
- The most common mistake is too much. Silence is a sound design choice
Free libraries versus generation
Free libraries give you human-recorded, often high-quality sound with clean licences. For common needs (door, footstep, rain, traffic, whoosh) they are excellent and cost nothing. Start here.
Generation wins when the sound is specific and the library does not have it: a particular kind of mechanism, a sound at an exact length, a texture you can describe but cannot find. At 5 credits, searching a library for ten minutes is more expensive than generating three options.
The layering rule
This is the craft point that separates sound design from sound effects.
A single sound reads as an effect placed on a timeline. Three layers read as a place. For any moment, build:
- The event. The thing that happens. A cup set down.
- The material. What it is made of and what it touches. Ceramic on wood.
- The room. What the space does to the sound. A small reflective kitchen, a large soft room.
Three effects at 5 credits each is 15 credits, about fifteen cents, and the difference between that and one effect is the whole perceptible gap between amateur and produced.
Ambience is the underused layer
The single most effective sound design addition to most video is not an effect at all: it is a continuous ambient bed under the entire scene. Room tone, distant traffic, wind, the hum of a building.
Without it, cuts between shots produce audible silence gaps that the viewer registers as wrong without knowing why. With it, the scene feels like a continuous place.
One 30-second ambient loop at 5 credits, running under everything, fixes more than any number of individual effects.
What it costs
Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:
| Element | Route | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Single sound effect | ElevenLabs SFX | 5 |
| Three-layer moment | ElevenLabs SFX x3 | 15 |
| Ambient bed, 30 seconds | Lyria 2 or ElevenLabs SFX | 5 to 13 |
| Music bed, 30 seconds | Lyria 2 | 13 |
| Music bed, per minute | ElevenLabs Music | 81 |
| Narration, 1,000 characters | ElevenLabs TTS | 13 |
A fully sound-designed 60-second video: eight three-layer moments (120), an ambient bed (13), a music bed (13) comes to about 146 credits, roughly $1.46.
Prompting an effect
Describe the physics, not the name:
- Bad: "door sound"
- Good: "heavy wooden door closing slowly, latch clicking, small reverberant hallway"
Name the material, the force, the speed and the space. Four specifics produce something usable; a noun produces a generic approximation.
For length, ask for it: "a three second whoosh with a soft tail" rather than trimming a longer file.
Where restraint matters
Not every action needs a sound. Real environments do not foley everything. A hand moving through air is silent.
Whooshes on every cut is the most recognisable amateur signature in edited video. Use one deliberately, not as punctuation.
Volume. Effects should sit under dialogue and under music, not compete. If you can clearly hear the effect, it is probably too loud.
Silence works. A beat with nothing in it, placed deliberately, does more than an effect.
FAQ
What is the best free sound effects source? A free library for common sounds. Generation for anything specific the library lacks.
How much does a generated effect cost? 5 credits on 8frame, about five cents.
How many layers should a moment have? Three: event, material, room.
What is the single biggest improvement? A continuous ambient bed under the whole scene.
Three layers, an ambient bed, and fewer effects than you think. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
