How Much Does a Photoshoot Cost?

The line items behind a photoshoot quote: crew, setups, talent, usage and post per image. What generation now absorbs, and how to brief for a comparable number.

A photoshoot quote is made of five things and the shoot day is only one of them: crew, setups, talent, post per image, and usage. Two quotes for "a product shoot" that differ threefold usually differ on setups and usage, not on the photographer's skill. We are not publishing day rates, which vary by market with no checkable average, but knowing the structure lets you read any quote and brief for a comparable one.

The five line items

Crew. Photographer, assistant, stylist, hair and makeup as needed. The stylist is the line clients cut and the one that most visibly shows in the result.

Setups. Each lighting or background change costs 30 to 60 minutes. This is the true driver of how long the day is, far more than the number of products or images.

Talent. Rate plus usage. Adding people converts a shoot into a production with casting, wardrobe, and scheduling risk attached.

Post per image. Retouching, colour, cutouts, and export sets, scaling linearly with image count. On large catalogues this frequently exceeds the shoot itself.

Usage. Where the images run, in what media, for how long, and exclusively or not. The most common reason two quotes are incomparable. See what is a usage licence.

What generation absorbs

Environments and context, not subjects.

Absorbed: location and backdrop variety, seasonal and lifestyle variants of an existing shot, context around a real product, and the format extensions. Canon 8frame prices, a credit at $0.01 in a top-up pack: an image is 6 to 21 credits, so twenty environment variants runs $1 to $4.

Not absorbed: the product's real surface and finish, real people, and anything a buyer inspects closely. Marketplaces also frequently require an accurate photographic main image, which settles the question regardless of preference.

The practical effect is that shoots got shorter rather than cheaper per hour: fewer setups, because the environments are generated afterwards from a properly lit hero.

How to brief for a comparable quote

Give five numbers: number of setups, number of final images, whether people appear, usage term and territory, and post expectations. Ask for the price split by the five line items above.

Quotes that arrive as one number are not comparable to each other, and the cheapest is usually the one that quietly assumed the fewest setups and the shortest usage.

FAQ

Why do photoshoot quotes vary so much? Setups and usage, almost always. A quote assuming two setups and six months of organic use is a different product from one assuming six setups and perpetual worldwide.

Can I skip the shoot and generate the images? For environments and context, yes. For the product and for people, no, if accuracy matters, and on marketplaces it usually must.

What is the cheapest way to get a full image set? Shoot fewer setups properly, then generate the environment and lifestyle variants from the resulting heroes. See how to plan a product shoot.

Fewer setups, properly lit, then generate the worlds. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
