A credit is a platform's internal unit for metering generation: you buy or receive a quantity, and each generation deducts an amount that depends on the model, the duration, and the settings.
The single most important property is that a credit is not a standard unit. It is defined by each platform, so "500 credits a month" means nothing until you know what a credit is worth and what a generation costs in them. Comparing two tools by credit count is the most common pricing mistake in this category.
What determines a credit's value
The platform's conversion rate. On 8frame a credit is $0.01 in a top-up pack. On Runway a credit is also $0.01. Elsewhere it can be worth several cents or a fraction of one.
What a generation costs in credits. A video clip might be 24 credits or 448 depending on the model, so a large allowance on an expensive model buys less than a small allowance on a cheap one.
Whether they expire. Credits that reset monthly are worth less than credits that carry over, because a quiet month is lost value. Most platforms reset.
How to compare two platforms
1. Convert credits to currency. Divide the pack price by the credits it contains.
2. Find the per-generation cost in credits for the model you will actually use.
3. Multiply by realistic attempts. Two to four attempts per usable output is normal, and it is the step everyone skips.
4. Check expiry.

Why platforms use credits instead of flat fees
Because generation costs the platform money per call, at rates that differ by model and change when providers reprice. A flat unlimited fee has to be funded by throttling heavy users or by light users subsidising them, and both are invisible at the point of purchase. Questions worth asking before buying
Do credits roll over? Can I top up mid-month without upgrading? Is the per-model price published or discovered at use? Does the same credit pool cover every model, or is it per-tool?
That last one matters more than it sounds: a pool covering every model lets you route each shot to the right one, and separate pools push you toward whichever tool you already have credits in.
