What Is a Lookbook? Definition + Examples

A lookbook is a curated set of images showing a collection styled as intended. What it contains, how it differs from a catalogue, and how many looks it needs.

A lookbook is a curated set of images presenting a collection the way its maker intends it to be worn or used, styled and shot as a coherent world rather than as isolated products.

The distinction from a catalogue is intent. A catalogue helps you buy a specific item and is organized for retrieval. A lookbook argues for a point of view and is organized for persuasion. Both can sell; only one tells you what the brand thinks it is.

What goes in one

Looks, not products. Each image is a complete styling: the piece in context, with what goes with it. A lookbook where every image is one item on a hanger is a catalogue.

A consistent world. One location logic, one light, one casting direction. The coherence is the argument.

A sequence. Lookbooks are read in order. Opening image sets the terms, the middle develops, the last image is the one people remember.

Enough repetition to establish rules and enough variation to hold attention. Twelve to twenty-four images is the usual working range for a seasonal collection.

Lookbook vs catalogue vs campaign

A campaign is one idea expressed through a key visual and its adaptations. A lookbook is many images expressing one world. A catalogue is a complete inventory presented for browsing. Fashion brands typically produce all three per season and confuse the first two constantly.

Examples

A small fashion label. Sixteen images: four locations, one light quality throughout, two models, styling that recurs across looks so the collection reads as a system rather than as separate garments.

A furniture brand. Twelve images of rooms rather than objects, where the product is present in every frame but never centered, because the argument is about how the pieces live together.

An accessories brand. Eight images, tight framing, one repeated gesture, which is the cheapest coherent lookbook to produce and often the most confident.

Lookbooks got cheaper in one specific way: the garment or product has to be real, and the world around it does not. Photograph the piece, generate the environment, and keep both on the same canvas so the set stays coherent. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
