A style frame is a single fully-realized still image showing exactly how a finished frame of the project will look, including lighting, color, composition, and treatment.
It answers the question a moodboard leaves open. A moodboard says "this kind of light, this palette, this energy" using other people's work. A style frame says "here is your product, in that light, in that palette," using yours. Clients approve moodboards and are still surprised by footage; they are rarely surprised after approving a style frame.
Where it sits in the process
The sequence is brief, moodboard, style frame, shot list, production. The style frame is the checkpoint where abstraction ends. Traditionally it was expensive, since making one meant a designer illustrating or compositing a frame that would never ship, which is why plenty of productions skipped it and paid for that later.
That economics changed. A style frame is now a generation: on 8frame, a Nano Banana Pro image is 21 credits and a Seedream 5 image is 6, so three competing style frames cost under 70 credits, roughly $0.70 at pack rate. When the checkpoint costs less than a coffee, skipping it stops being defensible.
What makes one work
It is finished, not indicative. A style frame with placeholder text or a rough product render is a moodboard with extra steps.
It is your subject. Found imagery cannot resolve the question the frame exists to answer.
It is one frame, not a set. The discipline is choosing the single image that carries the whole look. Producing eight is a way of avoiding the decision.
Examples
Beverage campaign. One frame: the can on wet slate, low sun raking across from camera left, condensation catching the light, deep shadow to the right. Approved, and every generated shot afterward is checked against it.
Talking-head series. One frame of the presenter mid-sentence in the actual set treatment, which settles the wardrobe, background, and lens conversation in one image instead of three meetings.

What is a moodboard is the step before. How to storyboard a 30-second ad covers the step after. What is color grading covers the finishing pass that a style frame effectively pre-approves.
The efficient version: build the moodboard, generate three style frames from those exact references on the same canvas, pick one, and let it govern every shot after it. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited; generation is paid from $19/month.
