Why Is My AI Image Blurry? Five Causes

Model tier, prompt conflicts, aspect-ratio stretching, upscale expectations and compression. How to tell which one you have.

A blurry generated image usually has one of five causes, and they need different fixes. Working out which one takes a minute and stops you regenerating twenty times for a problem that was in the prompt.

TL;DR

1. The tier

Canon 8frame prices, a credit is $0.01 at pack rate:

Model Credits Use
Imagen 4 Fast 4 Drafts and exploration
Seedream 4 5 Volume
Seedream 5 6 The default
Seedream 5 Pro 7 Sharper finals
Imagen 4 8 Photographic
Imagen 4 Ultra 12 Highest fidelity
Nano Banana Pro 21 Text inside the image

Diagnose it: rerun the same prompt one tier up. If it sharpens, that was the cause. Exploring on Fast at 4 credits and finishing on Ultra at 12 is the correct pattern and it costs almost nothing.

2. Your prompt asked for it

This is more common than people expect. These phrases produce softness because that is what they mean:

Diagnose it: read your prompt back looking only for words that describe blur. Remove them and regenerate at 6 credits.

If you want shallow depth of field on the background and a sharp subject, say both: "sharp focus on the subject, background falling off softly."

3. The aspect ratio

Very wide (21:9 and beyond) and very tall ratios are underrepresented in training data, and output quality drops at the extremes. Panoramic compositions in particular come out softer and less coherent.

The fix: generate at a standard ratio and crop, or accept the softness and upscale. For extreme panoramas, generating two images and stitching often beats one wide generation.

4. You needed an upscale

Generated images come out at the model's native size, which is smaller than print needs and sometimes smaller than a large screen needs.

Route Credits Shape
Clarity image upscale 13 Flat
Topaz Image Upscale 11 per 24MP block Scales with output
Topaz Recovery / Redefine 65 Heavier reconstruction

Get the output spec first, from your printer or platform, then upscale to it once at the end. Do not upscale iteratively.

Note what an upscale does: it infers plausible detail rather than recovering real detail. On text and faces the inference is visible, which is why generating at a higher tier beats upscaling a cheap one.

5. Platform compression

Your file can be sharp and the upload can look soft. Every social platform recompresses.

Diagnose it: compare your local file against the uploaded version. If your file is sharp, this is compression and there is nothing wrong with your generation.

What helps: upload at the platform's recommended dimensions rather than larger, since over-large uploads get downscaled with their encoder rather than yours. Avoid heavy grain and fine repeating detail, both of which compress badly.

The diagnostic order

  1. Read the prompt for blur words. Most cases end here.
  2. Rerun one tier up. Sharper means it was the tier.
  3. Check the ratio. Extreme ratios degrade.
  4. Check the output size against what you actually need.
  5. Compare local to uploaded. Difference means compression.

The video note

If the image is going into image-to-video, fix the softness before animating. A soft source produces a soft clip in every frame, and there is no video upscaler on this canvas to repair it afterwards.

That makes an upscale on the source still the highest-return 13 credits in a video workflow.

FAQ

Why is my AI image soft? Most often the prompt asked for it, or you used a draft tier for a final.

Which model is sharpest? Imagen 4 Ultra at 12 credits, or Seedream 5 Pro at 7.

Should I upscale or regenerate higher? Regenerate higher if you can. An upscale infers detail rather than recovering it.

Does upscaling fix a blurry image? No. It enlarges it. Real blur has no detail to recover.

Read the prompt first, then move a tier up. The 8frame canvas is free and unlimited, and generation is paid from $19/month.
