A refusal message tells you which of three things happened: a filter rejected your prompt or image, the model produced nothing it could return, or the provider itself failed. They look alike and need different fixes. Below are the exact messages from our own failure logs, what triggers each, and what to change. One thing first: on 8frame all of these reach you as the same line, "Sensitive content detected. Please try changing your prompt or image.", so use this page to work out which one you probably hit.
TL;DR
| Message | What happened | What to change |
|---|---|---|
| "...flagged by a content checker." | A filter rejected the prompt or an input image | Reword, or change the image |
| "The model did not generate the expected output for this prompt..." | Google's model returned nothing usable | Check the output type and any "attached" references |
| "Could not generate images with the given prompts and images." | Nano Banana could not work with that combination | Change the reference image or simplify the edit |
| "The input or output was flagged as sensitive... (E005)" | Seedance's filter, most often a close-up face in a reference | Reframe the reference, waist-up or wider |
| "...may be related to copyright restrictions." | Seedance thinks the result resembles protected material | Remove named characters, titles, logos |
| "Downstream service error" | The provider failed | Wait or switch models; nothing to fix on your side |
| "prompt length must be less than 2000" | Midjourney's prompt limit | Cut the prompt under 2,000 characters |
"Flagged by a content checker"
The content could not be processed because it contained material flagged by a content checker.
We have seen this exact sentence from GPT Image, Nano Banana and Kling runs. It is a moderation refusal: something in the prompt or in an input image crossed a filter. It does not say which part, so change one thing at a time.
- Start with the image if there is one. Filters read references as well as text. A different reference often clears it when rewording does not.
- Then the prompt. Violence, nudity, and named real people are what these filters exist to catch. Describing a type of person instead of naming one is the fix to try.
- Do not route around a likeness refusal. If the prompt names a real person, the refusal is doing its job.
"The model did not generate the expected output for this prompt"
The full message is worth reading, because it lists its own causes:
The model did not generate the expected output for this prompt. This may occur for several reasons, including unsafe content, a prompt that is incompatible with the selected media type (e.g., prompting an image model to generate audio), references to missing attachments, or other cases where the input cannot be processed as the requested output type.
We see it on Nano Banana runs, which use Google's image models. Two of the listed causes are easy to miss:
- Asking for the wrong output type. An image model asked for a video, a sound or an animation returns nothing.
- Referring to an attachment that is not there. "Use the product in the attached photo" with no photo connected, or with the image connected to a different input. Check that every image the prompt mentions is actually wired in.
If neither applies, treat it like a content refusal and change the image or the wording.
"Could not generate images with the given prompts and images"
Could not generate images with the given prompts and images. Please try again with different inputs.
Also from Nano Banana. It gives no cause. Try a different source image first, then a smaller edit.
Seedance: "flagged as sensitive" (E005)
The input or output was flagged as sensitive. Please try again with different inputs. (E005)
ByteDance's filter on Seedance. The trigger we confirmed in testing is a face in close-up in a reference image; the same person shot waist-up or full-length passes, and retrying the same image does not help. Full test results and fixes in Seedance "flagged as sensitive" (E005).
Seedance: "may be related to copyright restrictions"
The request failed because the output video may be related to copyright restrictions.
A separate check on the result. Remove whatever resembles a protected work: named characters, franchise titles, logos, or a reference frame taken from a film. Reframing a face will not help here.
"Downstream service error"
The provider behind the model failed. Nothing in your prompt or image caused it. Wait a few minutes or switch to another model.
"prompt length must be less than 2000"
Midjourney's limit, enforced by the provider. Every model has its own ceiling, from 800 characters on Wan 3.0 to 8,000 on Grok Imagine Image; the full list is in AI prompt length limits by model.

FAQ
Why did the AI image generator refuse my prompt? Usually a content filter reacted to the prompt or to an input image. Change the image first if there is one, then reword, avoiding real people's names.
What does "flagged by a content checker" mean? A moderation filter rejected something in the prompt or in an input image. The message does not say which, so change one thing at a time.
What does "the model did not generate the expected output" mean? Google's model returned nothing usable. Beyond unsafe content, it lists asking for the wrong output type and referring to an attachment that is missing as causes.
Is "Downstream service error" my fault? No. The provider failed. Wait or switch models.
