A GPT Image 1.5 detail: its three options map to three fixed sizes, 1024 x 1024, 1536 x 1024 and 1024 x 1536. The wide and tall ones are 3:2 and 2:3 in pixels, not exactly 16:9 and 9:16, so crop if you need the exact shape.

When you edit an image, the shape can follow it
When you give an image to edit, four of these models default to your input's shape and still let you pick another: Nano Banana, Grok Image, Qwen Image 3 and GPT Image. Flux Edit, the dedicated editor, offers the widest list of all, including 4:5, 9:21 and 1:2, and defaults to your input's shape.
For generating from text, pick the shape before you generate. Cropping a square into a 16:9 banner throws away almost half the image, and the model composed for a square.
Getting a shape a model doesn't offer
- Generate the nearest wider or taller shape and crop. For 4:5 on a model without it, generate 3:4 and trim a little off the top and bottom.
- Or generate with Nano Banana, which covers 4:5, 5:4 and 21:9 in one model.
- Keep the subject away from the edges you plan to crop, and say so in the prompt: "subject centred, space above and below".
